THE WHITE BEAKED DOLPHIN LEAP

In Skjálfandi Bay, it is also commonly observe numerous groups of dolphins. The white beaked dolphins might visit us throughout the year, in groups of around 10 individuals, but when feeding, they might gather into bigger groups!

The name of the species is derived from the light-coloured or white beak that these dolphins have it.

The Icelandic name is Blettahnýðir and the Greenlandic name is ardluasuk, which means “killer whale lookalike” due to the marked black and white coloration of the white-beaked dolphin.

The coloration of these dolphins is typically black on the back with a white saddle behind the dorsal fin and whitish bands on the flanks that vary in intensity from shining white to light gray. It seems that they could have 26 different color components and the coloration vary with age.

They are very sociable animals and live in pods or groups and cooperate to find food and protect each other. Dolphins are also known for their playful nature. They often jump and play in the water and might approach the boat doing bow riding!

Dolphins have one of the most complex communication of the marine mammals, each individual has their own whistle and they recognise other individuals on the same group!

The white-beaked dolphins are seen in the bay normally in mixed group composed by adults, juveniles and calves. Now, it is the peak breeding season, so it is commonly observe little dolphins associated with their mothers.

During this month, we have seen several groups of white beaked dolphins feeding or just having fun by jumping and show different acrobatic behaviours.

Join us on board to observe the leap of the white beaked dolphin!
