BEWARE THE SEA MONSTERS

Sea monster visiting Húsavík harbour

Tales of sea monsters date far back in Iceland's folk culture. Many stories exist and are told of elusive creatures showing themselves to seafarers far out at sea or even to villagers close to shore.

Sightings have been recorded all over the country - over the last centuries and up to date.

But what if we told you some mysterious sea creatures appeared in town yesterday afternoon?

"Reports say that a trawler fishing just off the coast caught a huge unknown creature. Soon after, the engine gave out, the ship sent out a Mayday and was towed to the docks. While waiting for scientists to examine this strange beast, the public is given a unique opportunity to take a look. Have the sea monsters of our ancient tales come back and what message do they bring?"

As part of the Reykjavík Art Festival, Hringleikur Circus Company and Pilkington Props brought large-scale puppets to town, played by the artists and entertaining everyone who dared to face the monsters and showed up by the waterfront yesterday afternoon.

Did you miss out on the sea monsters taking over our little harbour? No worries! The street theatre is headed east and will appear in Eskifjörður next (see link above for more details)!
