A TERN OF EVENTS

Arctic Tern, Bird Migrations, Nesting Period, Skjálfandi Bay
Our beautiful bay is surrounded by nesting places for many different bird species. One of these is the noisy arctic tern, who we frequently see fishing as we go out whale watching. Their breeding season is coming to an end around this time of year. We can now observe cute young terns testing their wings in the bay.

Very often, they seek out our whale watching boats - maybe it gives them a feeling of comfort, to have a platform to land on close by? We recognise the newly fledged chicks easily - they are loudly screaming and almost always accompanied by a watchful parent. Notice how the mature bird has a black cap and orange beak. The chicks don't have that black head cover yet, and their wings have more brown streaks. It's important that they practise well, because soon, their migration starts. These amazing birds will fly all the way to Antarctica, making it the birds with the longest migration pattern on earth!

Come join us on one of our tours and discover the amazing wildlife Skjalfandi Bay has to offer - birds, and of course, our beloved whales!
