WHEN THE SEA GETS WILD

Humpback whale jumping

Guests often ask us if the whales are affected by the weather. It makes sense - we all want to get the best out of our trips!

The simple response would be "not really, they need to come to the surface for breathing anyway". It's technically correct - and of course, they don't mind getting wet in the rain. However, we notice that the whales get especially jumpy when the weather is rough!

We've experienced a couple days during the last weeks with lots of wind and waves, have witnessed all kind of behaviours: fin slapping, head slapping, tail slapping and countless of breaches. Why were they so active? We are not sure. It doesn't matter - every time a whale gives a show, it's something magical to behold.

Rain or shine - a tour with Gentle Giants can offer lots of surprises! Going out on a sunny day? Great, there are not too many of those in Iceland, and the landscape is breathtaking anyway. Taking your chances on a stormy day? You might just be lucky and witness the whale show of a lifetime!
