CELEBRATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF WOMEN IN SCIENCE

RIB speedboat crew, Nikolina and Sarah, Skjalfandi Bay, Husavik, Iceland

Today we celebrate the incredible women who turn curiosity into knowledge – and knowledge into inspiration.

At Gentle Giants, the majority of our guides and two captains are women from all over the world. Many come from academic and research backgrounds in marine biology, ecology, environmental science, conservation, oceanography and beyond.

Out on Skjálfandi Bay, they don't just guide tours – they share science. With passion and expertise, they educate our guests about whales, wildlife and Icelandic nature, helping turn every encounter into a deeper understanding of the ocean and its gentle giants.

Science doesn't only happen in laboratories – it also happens at sea.

Many of our amazing women, led by our head guides Sarah and Josephine, actively participate in photo-identification research, documenting individual whales in Skjálfandi Bay. By contributing images to international research platforms like Happywhale, they help scientists track whale migration, behaviour and population trends across the globe. And when the boats are docked during the off-season, many of them return to universities, research projects and scientific work – continuing their contribution to marine science beyond the bay.

We are proud to celebrate the women who make science visible, accessible and inspiring every single day.

Check out our Crew page and get to know the talented women in our team!
