NORTHERN BOTTLENOSE WHALES IN SKJÁLFANDI BAY
One of the most exciting sightings of the season!
Northern bottlenose whales are among the most mysterious cetaceans in the North Atlantic. These deep-diving beaked whales can dive to depths of more than 2000 meters while searching for squid in the deep ocean.
Although they usually prefer offshore waters, we are lucky enough to encounter them occasionally in Skjálfandi Bay during the summer. Why they spend time in these shallower coastal waters is still not fully understood. While feeding may be one reason, many observations suggest that social behaviour could also play an important role.
Every encounter with this species feels special because there is still so much we don't know about them. And that's exactly what makes sightings like these so fascinating!
