AMMA SIGGA ADVENTURE

Puffin tours have been offered on our RHIB Amma Sigga (Granny Sigga) for some weeks now, together with other special tours. Our scheduled Big Whale Safari tours on Amma Sigga start on 1st June.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of welcoming a group of locals for a real adventure on board Amma Sigga.  Captain Stefán headed towards the mountains of Kinn where our oak boat Faldur had spotted whales earlier. Just a few minutes after leaving the harbour I saw the first blow. And then another one. There were loads of whales feeding - humpbacks and minkes – as well as birdlife - arctic terns, northern fulmars, kittiwakes – and a seal close to Fiskisker (fish rock).

After spending some quality minutes with the whales we headed to Rauðavík creek where passengers enjoyed more birdlife and beautiful nature. We also shared the story of the real Granny Sigga (Stefán’s grandmother), who the boat is named after. She lived all her life by Skjálfandi Bay and her story in the bay has become well-known. When Sigga was eight years old (1921) and lived in a place by the mountains called Vargsnes, her father rowed to Húsavík to get her an organ (instrument). When back to the shore, Sigga was so excited so the organ was placed on the beach and she played the first tones before her father and others carried it up the hill to their turf house.

Both passengers are crew returned to Húsavík harbour with a big smile on their faces. For me as a guide, I thought it was especially nice to be able to show and share with the local people this beautiful nature that we have in our bay – whales, birds and stunning scenery.

Amma Sigga is available for all kinds of tailor made tours, contact us for more information. The limitations of possibilities are up to your imagination!
