GIANT RESCUE DRILL

Yesterday the GG crew got to experience something very special – a big rescue drill with several hundreds of people involved; whale watching crew, rescue team, red cross, police, fire brigade and staff from the hospital.

The whole exercise was around a (pretended) fire onboard a whale watching boat in Skjálfandi Bay. Smoke was coming out of the kitchen and the passengers acted shocked and hurt. Our RHIB Amma Sigga – which is the fastest boat on the north of Iceland – was quick helping ferrying injured people to land.

Some of the injured people were also moved over to Sylvía where our staff had to take care of them the best they could. All our guides were onboard and most of the captains but only three got to act. The rest of us watched and learned that way.

It was a very good exercise where all authorities involved saw what works well and where things can be improved, which is the whole purpose of having a big exercise like this.
