WHALE WATCHING IN AUGUST

Yesterday I spent my day out on Skjálfandi Bay on board Sylvía. Nice encounters with northern bottlenose whales, humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins and a breaching humpback – what a day!

Shortly after leaving Húsavík harbour on my first tour, we spotted a nice group of northern bottlenose whales. Those animals are not so common in the bay, but during the last weeks they have been around and seen on some tours. Northern bottlenose whales can reach up to nine metres and eight tonnes. We then headed further north where we were met by a friendly humpback whale as well as dolphins swimming around.

On the 16:45 trip two humpback whales were the stars of the tour. The highlight was when captain Valdi Jón switched off the engine and we were drifting calmly with two humpbacks surfacing just next to the boat for quite some time. And then to make it even better, one of the humpbacks breached just in front of the boat!
