The past days have continued successful. Minkes as well as humpbacks have been showing up in the bay.
We - the team of Gentle Giants - are glad to announce that we continue to run the 13:15 GG1 Whale Watching departure until the 20th of October. Hence, we will continue to sail two daily departures on our traditional oak boats starting at 9:45 and 13:15 from the harbor of Húsavík.
Today our 12:30 "GG2 Big Whale Safari" was able to spot three different whale species. Along them was the biggest animal existing on earth: a BLUE WHALE! Just as other species also blue whales are migrating between their feeding grounds up north and their breeding areas in low latitude waters.
The 2015 season is still running and we will offer whale watching tours from Húsavík until October 31st. Our sales department is however, in full swing with preparations for the 2016 season.
Throughout September we got lucky to see several different whale species in the bay – from smallest to largest. Porpoises, dolphins, minkes, humpbacks and even the two largest species – four fin whales and a blue whale were spotted.
A couple of minutes ago a phone call from our oak boat Sylvía reached the Ticket Center. The boat is currently out on the "GG1 Whale Watching"-trip. Sandra, the guide who spoke on the phone, had simply perfect news:55 passengers are watching two fin whales in the south of Skjálfandibay at the very moment!!!! Fin Whales are the second largest whale on earth.
For October 1st-15th we will continue to offer the GG2 Big Whale Safari at 12:30! Since we have been so lucky with the whales the past month, we are excited to extend this tour a little further. On board our RIBs you have an even greater chance to encounter the gentle giants of Skjálfandibay: Due to the speed our RIBs are able to cover a much bigger area in search for whales.
The Pacific Islands are home to almost half of all known whale and dolphin species, but just as here in Skjálfandibay the humpback whale ist the best known one.The South Pacific humpback whale population migrates to the Pacific Islands to give birth to their calves.
In our bay we get to see different species throughout the season. Whilst some of them are coming for a few weeks only others can be seen throughout the season. That’s how we get to see humpback whales, minkes and white-beaked dolphins throughout the months.
Also the past days humpback whales have been spotted in the bay all the time.A literally big surprise entered Skjálfandibay yesterday in the early afternoon: On our 12.30 “GG2 Big Whale Safari” departure a blue whale showed up in the outer part of the bay.
