It's always exciting to spot a Blue Whale - the largest animal on earth. First the high powerful blow in the distance, visible from very far away. Then, when close, the big blowholes, the back, the small dorsal fin, the fluke (only sometimes) .
Today was a fantastic day out on Skjalfandi Bay. A really perfect day with the whales! It all started this morning when both of us headed out on Sylvia with a special group. Weather conditions were fantastic, light winds and good sea conditions.
During the last days we had been mainly spotting Minke whales and dolphins in the bay. It had been more than one week since we hadn't seen any Humpbacks although we had several of them in May.
Iceland dedicates first weekend in June to all sailors and seamen in the country celebrating what is called “Sjómannadagurinn” (Seamen’s day). There are several activities held in most of the towns, cities and villages in the country.
Iceland – the country of fire & ice – is a popular destination for honeymoons. It offers many romantic as well as exciting possibilities for all kinds of travels. Every year we welcome several newlyweds onboard our boats.
In our bay of Skjalfandi it is impossible to guarantee whale sightings. On some tours the bay is full of life, on others only a few whales are spotted, or even none at all. This however, is not the case in Dingle Bay, on the west coast of Ireland.
A few days ago we brought you news from the first tour this year that the first humpback of the season had been sighted. We were extremely happy with the first humpback sighting, and became even happier and surprised when we got it confirmed from the Husavik Whale Museum that this individual appears to be a re-capture from 2007! After comparing the humpback’s fluke with the Museum’s humpback whale catalogue, the Museum’s researchers came to the conclusion that this is the same individual that was sighted two days in a row in the beginning of June 2007, but has not been seen since (Husavik Whale Museum).
