September has started marvelous. Humpback whales were sighted throughout these days. Two individuals were seen swimming side by side daily. One of them turned out to be Snow White, a whale well known in this bay since years.
August is over and by that, a simply fabulous month finishes. Humpback whales were sighted daily, often several individuals in one area and some would even swim side by side, surfacing and diving synchronically.
Today, on the 29th of August, "Iceand Pro Cruises" has visited us in Húsavík for the last time of this season. Our visitors were blessed with beautiful weather, calm seas and lovely humpback whales surfacing around our boats continously.
Minkes are usually the shyer ones. Even though one can still get an excellent look at them, they are rarely seen approaching a boat for curiosity. However, within a few days, I was witnessing that behavior twice during a “GG2 Big Whale Safari” tour: Some days ago we suddenly saw a minke floating on the surface.
Even though it has been very foggy today, still all our tours have been really successful with many different exciting sightings!However, the luckiest ones were probably our crew and passengers who left the harbor on-board our beautiful oak boat “Sylvía” at 16:45 this afternoon.
The other day a pod of pilot whales surprised us in Skjálfandi Bay in the early morning. In difference to the sighting earlier this month the pod was this time swimming just north of Lundey (Puffin Island) and therefore all departures in the morning and early afternoon could reach this rarely seen whales.
Today (20th of August), our "GG1 Whale Watching" EVENING DEPARTURE at 8pm / 20:00 departs for the very last time of this year's season! So far, today’s tours have had a great success with up to five humpback whales swimming in the same area.
Yesterday (14.8.16) in the early evening yet another surprise awaited us out in the bay. Not being sighted since April, a pod of at least 15 killer whales (orcas) was spending some time in the outer part of Skjálfandi Bay not far from Flatey Island.
Annually puffins arrive all over Iceland – about 70% of the Atlantic Puffin can be observed around the country during summer. They can be seen along the coastline or – as here in Skjálfandi Bay – on islands.
