BLUE WHALES, SEI WHALE AND THE HYBRID

The past three days our passengers and crew on both RIBS were able to spot some of the largest animals on earth. Surprisingly, two blue whales returned to Skjálfandi. In fact, it seems to be a mother with her calf.

THE PRESUMPTIVE HYBRID IS BACK

Since a week the so-called Hybrid is back in our bay. Most likely that whale is a crossbreed of a fin and a blue whale. So far there is not much known about that animal. During its last stay in our bay (June 2014) researchers from Húsavík took an sample of its skin to find out more about this whale’s parents.

THE ENCOUNTER OF THE ARCTIC LOVERS

We started the trip at 11:00 in the afternoon in good weather conditions. We were sailing for almost 30 minutes on AMMA SIGGA looking for the whales. Today, they seemed to be so far away from the harbour, we had to go all the way out to Flatey.

SPERM WHALES NEXT TO OUR RIB

It’s not for nothing that Húsavík is considered to be the “Whale Watching Capital of Europe”. The abundance of fish and other food supplies is not only attracting several species of seabirds, but also loads of whales that migrate north into their feeding areas.

PROPOSING WHILE WHALE WATCHING

 Her plan was to see whales. His plan was to propose to her. They both managed, with success! In the middle of today‘s 13:15 tour, while watching whales from the roof of Sylvía, Petr went down on one knee and proposed to his whale-loving girlfriend Erika.

When today’s tours were cancelled because the sea was too rough, we saw it as a possibility to practise safety routines.The other day we held a rescue drill on board one of our oak boats and today it was time to do it on RIB Amma Kibba.

A nice group of Austrian sailors decided to make a sea angling tour with Gentle Giants as a part of their adventurous ten-day journey around Iceland. The perfect choice in our opinion!Our captain Ingimar, who is a local fisherman, steered the boat towards well-known fishing grounds in our bay.

MORE SCHEDULED DAILY DEPARTURES FROM 1ST JULY

The month of June has offered everything a whale watcher can dream of; many, big and active whales, a lot of flat sea and great weather. Flatey Island in Skjálfandi Bay reached a temperature of 23,1°c which is the highest in the country so far this year.
