THE FASCINATING WORLD OF BIRD NESTS

Along with all the whales, also numerous birds are migrating to Iceland for the summer months. Unlike whales though which come here for their feeding season, birds journey towards the North for their nesting season.

ANOTHER SURPRISING SIGHTING

What better than to be surprised twice in the same week?! Not only was a hybrid spotted in Skjálfandi Bay, but we were also able to see the biggest toothed whale that we have on our planet, the sperm whale! This is an uncommon sighting for our tours since it is an animal that enjoys being in deeper waters.

OUR FRIEND, THE HYBRID, IS BACK!

On the 24th of June we got fortunate, we sighted the hybrid (offspring of a Blue whale and a Fin whale) that likes to visit Skjálfandi Bay. It is a whale that was spotted for the first time in 2007 and since then, almost every year enjoys the waters of this beautiful area.

Tales of sea monsters date far back in Iceland's folk culture. Many stories exist and are told of elusive creatures showing themselves to seafarers far out at sea or even to villagers close to shore.  Sightings have been recorded all over the country - over the last centuries and up to date.

WORLD OCEANS DAY

We're sailing again! After days of extremely stormy (and nearly winterly) weather, we are finally able to leave Húsavík harbour again and head out onto Skjálfandi Bay in search for whales and other marine wildlife - right on time for WORLD OCEANS DAY.

OF STORMY WEATHER AND SEAS

Since the beginning of the week, our boats have been tied up in the harbour, unable to head out onto Skjálfandi Bay in search for whales. Stormy weather conditions and a thus wavy sea stop us from heading out to admire the gentle giants of the ocean.

A VERY SPECIAL SEAMAN'S DAY AT GENTLE GIANTS

Today, we celebrate "Sjómannadagurinn" - or the seaman's day - here in Iceland. This day honours the role fishermen as well as other seaman and their families have played in Icelandic history. It was first celebrated in 1938, but in 1987 "Sjómannadagurinn" became a public holiday.
