My face was one big happy smile when I entered Skjálfandi Bay this morning. Finally it seemed that summer had arrived to us and the weather conditions were stunning – calm sea, clear sky and perfect visibility.
Today the sun is (finally) shining bright from a clear blue sky and a fin whale, minke whales and dolphins have been spotted so far. This is summer in Iceland! The whole GG crew has over the weekend been more or less involved in a beautiful wedding which took place on Flatey Island on Saturday. The wedding couple and their 130 guests from all over the world were shipped between Húsavík and Flatey on our boats.
Still there is loads of life in the bay; today blue whales have been seen on all our tours. Peter Waltl, guide by us since 2008, arrived the other day to stay for the season. He seems very happy to jump straight into work and out on a bay with humpbacks and blue whales.
This is what Guðrún said when I asked her about how the trip at 12:00 was: “It was windy but worth it! We saw two blue whales side by side and a third one a bit further away. In the same area there were also two humpbacks swimming together, playing right next to the boat when we focused on them; flipper-slapping and lob-tailing.
Sylvía is just back from an adventure on Skjálfandi bay tonight.
9:45 I went out with Captain Óðinn on a Sylvía full of passengers. Cloudy but calm. We found a minke whale and two groups of amazing white-beaked dolphins. I pinch my arm when seeing those beautiful animals bow-ride just for fun, right under the noses of my passengers.
Matthew and Charis, a couple from UK, have dedicated one of their two weeks in Iceland completely to whale watching with Gentle Giants. They have bought multi-trip passes which give them the possibility to join as many trips as they want during one week.
Humpbacks are known for being playful and my passengers onboard Faldur certainly witnessed that today. When leaving Húsavík harbour, fog was crawling into the bay. We went out with no expectations but as always, did our very best to try to find whales.
