Yesterday evening I had one of the best trips since my one-month-carrier as a Gentle Giants guide started. I guided Big Whale Safari on Amma Sigga with 12 people on board and Sigdor as captain. The conditions were very good: no rain, flat sea, motivated passengers.
After four seasons as a whale watching guide, and several hundred trips, one can still experience new things - as no two tours are the exactly the same. I could not believe my eyes when the minke (which had been behaving like minkes do most) suddenly started jumping right in front of us - it was so unexpected! Just like the rest of the Icelandic nature whales are unpredictable and this one suddenly started showing off.
It is the fastest and probably most awesome boat on the north of Iceland, our Amma Sigga, with Puffins Exclusive and Big Whale Safari scheduled daily. We have also made spontaneous tours upon request and loads of adrenalin trips for groups - as some people find this “blue thunder” irresistible.
Guide Lia onboard Faldur, just gave us a report from Skjálfandi Bay from the first tour this morning: "We have been very very lucky with the whales. As always, we did not have any idea when leaving the harbour what would meet us out there.
Those days the summer is high in Húsavík. Loads of people wander the streets, enjoy the sun and go whale watching. There is an annual festival going on over the weekend, called Mærudagar (Candy Days).
For some days there have been no humpbacks in the bay - but now they are back! Ann-Sophie guided the 9:45 tour and this is her story:“We had been watching a minke when we decided to head further out in search for something else.
After a few days of minke whales and dolphins, a blue whale was seen on the morning tour onboard Sylvía. Passengers got the privilege to witness the largest animal on earth - which can grow up to 33 metres and 200 tons! Those are good news that the bigger whales are still around in the area and hopefully they will stay some time with us.
“I got so surprised when it jumped – I've never, during all my minke encounters, experienced anything like it!” Guide Guðrún explained to us, excited after her 13:15 tour. It had been showing off also for the boat at 16:45 when it was Guide María's turn to be happily surprised.
It kept on and we never wanted the show to end; A jumping humpback which made us forget both time and space. I was guiding the Big Whale Safari yesterday evening and what could possibly suit better on that tour than a humpback breaching some 70-80 times - right in front of us? The photos are taken by Peter who was a guide onboard Sylvía.
